Consistency, Work-Life Balance, Meh...

Don't be like me

Yoo Welcome to Issue #15 of Navigating Security.

šŸƒQuote of the week:

There are seasons where youā€™ll have to give 100% to hacking, but 100% all the time is unsustainable. Longevity is important. Take a break.

Why I am an average hackeršŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

I do not consider myself an elite hacker in any regard. Firstly, I havenā€™t been doing this for long enough, but compared to the other people on my level (YOE wise), Iā€™m pretty average.

Iā€™ve noticed this is mostly because I take my personal life more seriously nowadays. I am very intentional about my relationships outside of work and those take a lot of time and energy to tend to. On the flip side, early on in my career I spent all my time hacking and studying which meant less time outside. I had to ask myself, would I rather be the best of the best whilst my relationships with my friends and family crumble or be average and find fulfilment in both my work and my personal life? I chose the latter.

Where am I going with this? Thereā€™s more to hacking, take care of yourself by finding something else to balance out the amount of time you spend in front of a screen. There are seasons where youā€™ll have to give 100% to hacking, but 100% all the time is unsustainable. Longevity is important.

Why I am not consistent, but you shouldšŸ¤”

Despite finding systems that have made my work life easier, I find myself being inconsistent. I cannot tell you why because I do not know either. Hereā€™s my encouragement to you though, find a sustainable cadence. I started this newsletter as a weekly thing, then moved it to biweekly, but even so, I have barely written anything this quarter. For now, letā€™s blame the summer - it is too hot to be doing anything.

Hard work and consistency beat talent any day. The person who can do something ā€œsmallā€ consistently will do way better in the long run than one who does something ā€œbigā€ once in a while. I wish I could convince myself of this and stick to it.

Anyway, donā€™t be like me. Slow motion is better than no motion or something along those lines.

This was not technical at all because I am trying to use it as a means to start writing again. So, see you in the next issue. Cheers
